PNW-ISA Arbor Chat: Collaborating with Community: How Arborists and Community Tree Stewards Can Grow Healthy Trees Together

PNW-ISA Arbor Chat: Collaborating with Community: How Arborists and Community Tree Stewards Can Grow Healthy Trees Together

During this online talk, we will explore the ways in which community tree stewards and other community-based tree care volunteers can help support a healthy urban canopy. During this talk, Sarah will outline reasons why community members should be included in tree care, in what ways community members can participate in tree care, and how building community capacity can support the arboriculture industry and local arborists in particular. Sarah will address concerns about community tree planting and stewardship, such as poor tree selection, poor site selection, and lack of watering, and suggest ways that tree stewardship trainings and on-going opportunities for learning can address these concerns. Trained community tree stewards often become allies for arboriculture, appreciating the importance of training and experience in tree care, particularly around pruning, condition ratings, and hazardous tree determinations. Community tree stewards are likely to be or become champions for trees and tree care in their neighborhoods advocating for the need for arborists to do advanced tree care. Some community tree stewards continue on to pursue a career as an arborist. For this reason, community tree stewardship trainings can help diversify the arboriculture industry.

Bilingual Neighborhood Tree Walk

Join us for this Tacoma Tree Foundation bilingual Neighborhood Tree Walk offered in English and Spanish. This program is free to the public, but registration is helpful.

What can a walk from a park to a reservoir teach us about the relationship between trees, cities, and people? By connecting two apparently ordinary landmarks, this walk will help us make sense of the presence and absence of trees, about tree benefits, as well as the importance of cultivating native plants. Join Sarah Low and Alejandro Fernández on this bilingual walk through Hilltop and learn how to see your streets from a new perspective!

Remember to bring comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing so you can focus on enjoying the walk!

Meeting Point: Grant Park on S. Grant Ave.

Bilingual Neighborhood Tree Walk

Join us on Sunday, April 21st for a Tacoma Tree Foundation Neighborhood Tree Walk offered in English and Spanish.

Did you know Alling Park was once a fruit farm? In fact, the Alling family was the first to ship apples from Washington to China! Frank Alling, farm owner, also happened to be passionate about wildlife and was well aware of our depleted urban forest, which is one of the reasons why he donated 10 acres of his farm to Metro Parks. Alling Park is a great starting point for us to walk together as we consider the relationship between our parks and neighborhoods, how urban development shapes them, and the benefits that trees provide us and wildlife. Join Sarah Low and Alejandro Fernández for this bilingual walk!

Remember to bring comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing so you can focus on enjoying the walk!

Meeting Point: S 61st Street and Sheridan.

We will learn how we can care for trees to encourage a diverse and thriving ecosystem.

Public Lands Alliance Conference

Sarah C. Low will be presenting a talk entitled “Walk This Way: The Power of Mindfulness in Nature” at the 2024 Public Lands Alliance Convention and Trade Show in San Fransisco. With this workshop, we’ll focus on nature mindfulness walks as tools for healing, stress management, and community cohesion. Participants will have an opportunity to participate in guided mindfulness practices – we’ll deconstruct a typical nature mindfulness walk and explain the purpose and benefits of different components. Participants will learn tangible ways that practices can be applied to programs other than mindfulness walks, to help strengthen community as well as encourage an appreciation for public lands and natural resources.
